I have always been told that it’s ok to talk to yourself - as long as you don’t answer or argue with yourself. I don’t have an issue with it. Although I suppose it might be a problem if you have to repeat yourself because you weren’t listening.

But as an instructor have you ever talked, or better yet, taught to yourself? Now right now you’re probably thinking that it finally happened. Michael has lost it - completely.

How can one be taught by themselves? Through the magic of modern technology.

When was the last time you recorded one of your training sessions? The whole thing - audio and video. And if you have recorded it, have you watched it all the way through?

If we are doing something that is distracting, it’s important that we spot it and eliminate it. If we aren’t clear in a certain part of the class, we need to work to make it clear. If the sequencing is off, it must be reorganized.

Going over your notes and your presentation beforehand helps a lot. But every once in a while, we need to see the end product. To ensure what we thought was the delivered message is indeed the message that was delivered. To ensure that we aren’t a distraction.

Teach yourself. Literally. It is only through talking to ourselves that we can make the course all it should be for our people.
